Festival Western In St Tite

Festival Western In St Tite: In this past friday's entry, I mentionned that I was headed to St Tite, Quebec, for the Festival Western.

The Festival Western was awesome! It's a full fledged party complete with half a million people- yes, that's 500000 people, crammed into the small eastern town known as St Tite which usually boasts 5000 residents.

From what I could tell, the Fesitval Western is a party focused on everyone wearing cowboy clothes, horses, beer, many rodeos, a lot of country music, all sorts of vendors, parades, bars, and beer.

I took a few photos- you can check out my album here.

If you're wondering about skating updates, I'll probably get some up some time tomorrow.

I think that if Ed Leung had been with me, he would have played this shooting game all night to try to win one of the spidermen dolls. I was considering trying to win one for him. For those of you who don't know Ed, he LOVES spiderman. He wears a spiderman skin suit.

Many of St Tite's street close down for the festival and many of the residents rent out their driveways and lawns to vendors for 10 days. Lots and lots of cowboy hats were on sale at these vendors. I counted at least a dozen cowboy hat vendors like this one. The price of the hats ranged from $20 to $200.

That's me outside of one of the many big-make-shift beer tents- it's after midnight- I heard that many of the cowboys and rodeo people stayed up and drank and partied until 7am and got into some pretty big fights, compelte with bloody noses and missing teeth. As much as I wanted to cover these fights on Speed Skate World, I was busy sleeping. Plus, I leave this stuff for Rodeo Festival World.com

The Saturday night rodeo was apparantly a success- this was taken just after midnight when the cowboys and workers were loading up the horses. This stadium is so close to my uncles house that I can probably throw skate wheels at it

You can see these campers and winnabagoes for miles and miles. When people want to leave St Tite and they decide to leave at the wrong time, they get punished with a bumper-to-bumper traffic jam that lasts up to 3 hours. Not bad for a town of 5000 eh? Many of the people camp for the whole festival, so campgrounds are hard to find, so hard that many of St Tite's residents will rent a space on their lawn for up to $2000 for the week!

Queues de Castor- Beaver Tails. The most delicious food on earth!! I had 2 beaver tails on Saturday night. I wanted more, but they are filled with calories, sugar, and fat, so I bought a celeri and stuffed myself with celeri instead of more beavertails. On Sunday, I bought celeri ahead of time and stuffed myself, so I didn't eat any beavertails.

Saturday night crowd...just outside of my uncle Rejean's house. It was lots of fun trying to sleep with all the noise, music, and racket going on outside!

This stage, right in front of my uncle's house, had performers all day and night long. Again, it was fun trying to sleep while these performers were playing. Actually, I enjoyed laying in bed and listening to some of these musicians- some of the performers were very very good

The popular saturday night drinks

Saturday night in the supermarket- BEER!

14 horses- what an awesome sight!

A band

Gorgeous horse

More horses- the parade had hundreds of the 4 legged critters!

Another band

Early sunday morning- BEER!

Great way to get some more training buddies Peter. A few more posts like this and the Kiwi's will be leaving Switzerland by the bus loads heading for Canada for the beer, beaver tails and of coarse some skaing. Cheers Alex

I don't doubt that I would have been there all night trying to win one of those awesome spiderman toys for my collection! thanks for the shout-out Peter, it made me smile. 8)

Thanks also for the encouragement this weekend. Your prompt at the last lap had me skating hard and helped motivate me to come in ahead of the chase pack rather than letting them catch me.
